Musée de la Castre

Here, collections of Mediterranean archeology, ethnology and early art are presented, as well as an unusual set of musical instruments.

The museum got its foundation when the Dutch Baron Tinco Martinus Lycklama, who lived in Cannes in the late 1800s, bequeathed in 1877 his private collection of antiques, oriental artifacts, ethnography and primitive art to the city of Cannes.

The entrance to the museum, a small garden planted with Mediterranean species, especially large umbrella pines, welcomes you.

In a series of small rooms surrounded by gardens, the art collections and objects from Oceania, the Himalayas, the Arctic, a rich collection of Mediterranean antiques and pre-Columbian pottery are presented.

Three rooms are dedicated to Orientalism and art from Iran.

In the middle of the museum exhibition, there is access to the castle’s inner courtyard, where you can get up to the watchtower. The 12th-century watchtower is a chapel for Saint-Anne and contains a unique collection of musical instruments from around the world.

After climbing the 109 steps of this magnificent medieval building, you can enjoy a 360 ° view of Cannes and the coast.
