The Black Penitents of Menton
This chapel was built by order of Prince Honoré II of Monaco in 1639 and given to the Brotherhood of the Black Penitents.
It is the altar in the chapel that attracts the most attention. It is made as a “marqueterie”. This is a special form of craftsmanship where a kind of veneer is applied as decoration.
Here, the artist has decorated the altar with a mosaic with walnut and orange wood inlays in different tones.
The altar cabinet doors are made of thuja, the frames of ivory, the pillars of rosewood, the statues of jujube and other parts of ebony.
