Why Visit the Jean Cocteau Museum Le Bastion

The Musee Jean Cocteau Le Bastion is one of the most significant cultural sites in Menton. The museum combines modern art with a historic building — a 17th-century bastion that Jean Cocteau himself chose to exhibit his works. It provides a unique experience where art, architecture, and views merge. The museum is perfect for those who love modern art and want to understand Cocteau’s creative universe.

What can you see at the museum?

The museum houses a large collection of Cocteau’s works, from drawings and illustrations to ceramics, paintings, and graphic works. Many of the works are personal and show different sides of the artist’s creative thinking. The exhibitions are often curated with a focus on themes such as the cycle of life, mythology, and the symbolism of the sea, which is also reflected in Menton’s surroundings.

The Renovation in 2020: Le Bastion Gets Ready for the Future

In 2020, Le Bastion also underwent an extensive restoration, which improved both the exterior and interior of the historic fortress. The restoration work focused on preserving the building’s original structure and details, while modernizing it to accommodate exhibitions in a more stable and secure manner. The result is a museum that stands stronger as an architectural and historical monument, where Jean Cocteau’s works are presented in settings that respect both the craftsmanship of the past and today’s exhibition standards.

Before After

The Main Museum in Menton: Closed Since 2018

The main museum in Menton – Museum Jean-Cocteau collection Séverin-Wunderman – which opened in 2011 in a modern building designed by Rudy Ricciotti, was seriously damaged during the Adrian storm in October 2018. Violent waves forced seawater into the basement and exhibition areas, destroying a large part of the collection.

Since then, the museum has been closed to the public, and a long-standing conflict between the city and the insurance company over the costs of reconstruction has delayed the reopening for years. There is not yet a fixed date for when the museum will reopen, and it is expected to happen around 2030 at the earliest, if insurance and repair issues are resolved.

Current exhibitions at the Jean Cocteau Museum Le Bastion

As the main museum remains closed, Le Bastion plays a central role in communicating Jean Cocteau’s works in Menton. The museum therefore continuously presents temporary exhibitions, which focus on different aspects of Cocteau’s artistic universe and collaborations. The exhibitions change throughout the year, and it is therefore always recommended to check the museum’s official program before your visit, so you get a full overview of what is on the program right now.
