Sainte-Madeleine – A medieval church with historical depth
Sainte-Madeleine church was built in the 15th century but is based on earlier religious structures from the Middle Ages. Its solid stone façade and discreet bell tower testify to a time when the church played a central role in the small community – both as a spiritual center and as a symbol of stability during troubled times.
Baroque and Renaissance in harmony
Inside the church you are met by a surprising richness of decoration. The Baroque-style altar is flanked by paintings and relics that give a glimpse of both the city’s faith and its cultural ambitions. One of the highlights is a painting by Ludovico Brea, a prominent Provençal Renaissance artist active in the area in the late 15th century.
A living church space today
Sainte-Madeleine church still serves as a parish church and is used for masses, weddings and local festivals. Its simple yet atmospheric interior invites a quiet moment – even for visitors who just want a break from the city streets. The church is open most of the day and is easily accessible from Place des Arcades and the other sights of Biot’s old town.
